Hello ~ I’m Bella St John, and I would like to welcome you!  My art has become so much more to me than I could ever have imagined.  Not only am I honoured to be a professional artist who brings love and respect to each piece I undertake, but just the thought of a new painting, or continuing to grow and expand by experimenting with different techniques – these are things that bring my soul immense joy.  I have never felt such love for an endeavour as I do for my artwork.

I have built this portal – some pieces to simply share, others to sell, and hopefully all that bring a smile…

Unlike many, I am no longer active in the social media world – I have happily retreated from the ‘virtual world’ back to a more ‘real’ way of being that makes me happy.

Fine Art Portraits by Ms Bella St John

Capturing Legacy, Character, and Soul in Every Stroke

From noble lineage to everyday grace, each portrait I create is more than likeness – it’s legacy. As a devoted fine artist working in oil pastels and watercolour, I craft soulful, hand-painted portraits that honour the story behind every face. Whether a cherished loved one, a public figure, a beloved pet, a portrait for your own personal brand, or capturing our wildlife or birdlife, your portrait is painted with reverence, sensitivity, and meticulous care.

Working from my studio in Europe, I accept a limited number of commissions annually to ensure every detail receives the time and attention it deserves. Each piece includes a Certificate of Authenticity bearing both my signature and personal wax seal—two layers of provenance and protection.

Portrait Commissions Include:

  • Private, personal brand, and family portraits

  • Heritage and institutional figures

  • Literary, historical, or themed commissions

  • Pet and animal companions

  • Posthumous portraits from reference images

Portraits may be created from high-quality photographs, and where feasible, I may request additional context to best reflect the subject’s essence – their passions, purpose, and presence. Every commission is a collaborative process, with thoughtful communication at each stage.

A Painting That Lives Beyond the Canvas

My portraits are not merely depictions—they are tributes. Whether it hangs in a family home, a gallery, or an institution, each piece is created to honour the subject’s life and significance. I bring not just skill to each commission, but heart—and a deep respect for the timelessness of portraiture.

✨ If you don’t LOVE it, you don’t pay for it! ✨

I was watching an art competition program a few months ago when they unveiled the commission.  The shock and disappointment on several people’s faces – including the sitter and the institution where the portrait was to hang – was obvious.  While it was an interesting work, it was… well… just not what anyone except the artist was really expecting.

I made a decision at that moment that if my clients don’t love what I create, they don’t pay for it – it’s that simple.

At the outset, I will give you an idea of the general style and direction I feel the piece will go, and will base it around the photos you send to me.  Once the painting is complete, I will send you several photos of the piece for you to review.

My clients to date have always loved their finished pieces, but if for any reason someone doesn’t, they don’t pay for it, and I will simply retain the work.
